Version 4

It’s been five months (!) since my last post, and it’s taken me that long to design, implement and launch version four of johnzeratsky.com. I hope you like it!

My primary goal for the redesign was to highlight the links and photos I publish on an almost-daily basis. (FriendFeed helps me do this; see below.) I recast the blog posts as Articles, since they’ve become longer, richer, and less frequent over time. I also added a prominent summary of my current projects, with links to photos, examples or actual project output.

Generally speaking, I want to represent my whole “web self” with this site. Hopefully johnzeratsky.com now gives you a good sense of what I’m thinking, reading, and doing on a day-to-day basis.

How it works

After spending close to a year building a custom, Django-based CMS for this blog, I reverted to Movable Type 4 at the last minute. The software is feature-rich, reliable and easy to use. The community is active (again) and the documentation is excellent. After five years deploying, configuring, hacking and using Movable Type, I’m still happy to be here. (Thanks, Six Apart!)

FriendFeed also plays a huge role in this new version of johnzeratsky.com. I’m using this fantastic service to merge my del.icio.us bookmarks, Flickr photos, Netflix movies, and johnzeratsky.com articles into one feed, which is included on my home page and available for you to subscribe to (if you want).

My new design is fully buzzword compliant — grid-based, elastic, and composed to a vertical rhythm. Hopefully this means it will be more friendly to you, the reader, and more appropriate to the types of content I publish.

Problems? Thoughts? Let me know

I really want to hear what you think of the new design. Please feel free to send me an email (at john@zeratsky.com or via the “Email the author” link in the left column). And thanks for reading!
