EMI to sell their catalog DRM-free on iTunes

This is a step in the right direction.

This morning, EMI announced that they will start selling higher-quality, DRM-free music on Apple’s iTunes Music Store. The new tracks are 256kbps, double the current 128kbps bit rate.

And this is my favorite part (which will likely draw criticism from some people):

In addition, iTunes customers will be able to easily upgrade their entire library of all previously purchased EMI content to the higher quality DRM-free versions for just 30 cents a song.

Oh yeah… the new tracks cost more. $1.29 instead of $0.99.

Freedom ain’t free. Or something.
