Chris Thile’s How to Grow a Woman From the Ground
Chris Thile never fails to impress.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Nickel Creek — particularly the way they blended styles and created a progressive sound without leaving their roots behind.
I use past tense because they are no more. Fortunately, Chris continues to make music and tour with the cleverly named How to Grow a Band. (He’s a funny guy.)
Anyway, I’m listening to How to Grow a Woman From the Ground and it’s really terrific. My favorites (as usual) are the genre-bending covers and reinterpretations of songs I know well. Highlights in that vein are:
- “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” originally by The White Stripes
- “Wayside (Back in Time),” originally by Gillian Welch
- “Heart in a Cage,” originally by The Strokes
What a great lineup (and that’s only three of 14 songs).
