Try! by John Mayer Trio
Late last summer, I read somewhere that John Mayer had assembled a blues-rock trio and was planning a tour. The group would include Grammy winner Steve Jordan on drums and studio great Pino Palladino on bass. A couple of singles showed up on iTunes, which I eagerly downloaded.
On September 24, we saw them play at Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee. Although the screaming teenage girls (presumably Mayer’s “old” fans) got a little irritating, the music was great — this was clearly a new direction for Mayer and a Very Good Thing in my opinion.
At the end of November, the Trio released Try!, a live recording (like, really live, sans overdubs and excessive Pro Tools clean-up) from their Fall sprint around the U.S.
And in the last two weeks, I’ve been listening to Try! almost every day. This is one of my favorite albums in a long time.
Give it a listen at iTunes, and let me know what you think.
