Kittens!
Don’t be confused by the movie of similar title — I’m talking about Real Cats! Live and in our apartment!
The Story
Michelle and I have been talking about getting cats for a while. Originally we thought, “Let’s wait until after we move,” but as the completion date for our condo slipped into the future, we decided to scrap that plan and ACT.
(The story of our condo — still under construction — is a good one for another time.)
(Also, a lot of people think we’re crazy for getting two cats. It’s a little wild, but we thought it best for them. This way, they’ll always have a play-buddy.)
A while back — 9 weeks and two days, to be exact — one of Michelle’s colleagues at Corbett rescued four kittens when their mother was killed by a car. It’s a miracle they survived the accident, not to mention the upbringing without a proper mom.
But their foster mom was a good one, and they made it. Michelle met the kittens when they were small enough to fit in her palm, and fell in love immediately.
Adoption and Adaptation
We picked up our kittens — named Chase and Guinnivere (we call her Guinny) — just over a week ago and brought them home to our more-or-less cat-safe apartment. We secured all the wires, closed up all the trash cans, put the extra shoes away, and lowered the toilet seat for good.
Of course, Guinny and Chase found plenty of mischief. They’re still enjoying it. And we’re adjusting to sleepless nights and built-in nightly playtime.
The Future
That plan about getting cats after we move? It’s still a good one. (The extra bathroom will be a handy spot for the litter box.)
But for now, we’re having a great time playing, feeding, teaching and hanging out with two of the cutest cats around. Keep your eye on my Flickr stream — it’s jammed with cat pictures already and not likely to thin out anytime soon.
