Running a musical relay
Mike Rundle, my buddy and fellow 9ruler, has passed me a musical baton. I should be packing for my impending move to Chicago (via Green Lake), but what’s better for procrastinating than a good ol’ me-too meme? (Nothing.)
Total volume of music files on my computer
According to iTunes, I have 5024 songs, for a total of 16.2 days music and 27 GB of drive space.
This includes plenty of stuff I don’t listen to anymore, but it definitely includes plenty I do listen to. I keep it all organized with iTunes’ built-in rating system, and carry it around on either a third-generation 15 GB iPod or a 1 GB iPod Shuffle, depending on how I’m feeling.
The last CD I bought
Tough one. Very tough.
I bought The Frames’ new Burn the Maps (which is something of a let-down) a couple of weeks ago on iTunes, but I suspect that doesn’t count. I can’t be sure, but I think the last CD I bought was Grace by Jeff Buckley (which is not a let down; in fact, it’s an incredible album) — but come to think of it, that was a christmas gift.
So, I am not answering this question. Tough luck.
Song playing right now
“Thaw” from Medeski Martin and Wood’s incredible live acoustic album, Tonic. (For the unacquainted, MMW usually plays funky electric music that hippies and other “free spirits” like to dance to. But they happen to play an amazing acoustic show, when given the chance.)
Five songs I listen to a lot, or mean a lot to me
I’ll take this as a “top five favorite songs” and do my best. In no particular order:
- “Everything In Its Right Place,” by Brad Mehldau (not Radiohead)
- “Blackbird,” by Crosby, Stills and Nash (originally a McCartney, but CSN does it best)
- “In a Sentimental Mood,” by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
- “City Love,” by John Mayer
- “Mellow My Man,” by The Roots
Wow, that was hard. Apologies to all the wonderful songs I left out.
